Most people applying for a JIB ECS card must pass the ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment first. It is a closed-book, multiple-choice test that checks you can work safely on site and understand your health, safety and environmental responsibilities.

How many times can I retake the ECS assessment?
There is no limit and no waiting period. If you do not pass, you can book and resit the assessment again at any time.
How much does the ECS Health & Safety assessment cost and how do I book it?
Book directly through the ECS (the MyECS portal) or an approved assessment centre. It is around £47.50 + VAT at the time of writing — check ecscard.org.uk for the current fee. You do not need a paid third-party agent.
Is the ECS card the same as a CSCS card?
For electricians the ECS card is the electrical industry equivalent and carries the CSCS logo, so it is accepted on sites that require CSCS. Electrotechnical workers should hold an ECS card rather than a separate CSCS card.
Do I have to take the ECS test at a centre?
It can be taken online with remote invigilation through MyECS, or at an approved assessment centre. Either way it is closed-book — no notes or revision materials are allowed during the assessment.
